The mural - consisting of 220 ceramic tiles - is huge - 4.6 x 2. M.
The image depicted – a close-up of water flowing in the Cam River,
Somerset, Tasmania (the eastern boundary of the Waratah-Wynyard
Municipality) - is a metaphor for life. Water plays a crucial role
in all living things on earth – locally for our forests, native
marsupials & other animals – and agriculturally for people in this
municipality - live stock, irrigation, pastures, wheat, potatoes,
onions, carrots, pyrethrum, bulbs & flowers. Flowing, potable water
represents life and the passage of time in life. Regrettably, the
existence of bountiful & ever-present water has been assumed to be
a constant both here in this area, & in the world at large. The
effects of climate change are now known to totally challenge that
history – in spite of right-wing denial. The current era is called
the Anthropocene - the era defined by human activity. Availability
of potable water is a world wide challenge. Without potable water,
life in Wynyard will cease to exist. Period. The photos attached
show (i) the original image of the Cam River, (ii)the streetscape
around the mural & (iiI) the mural installed on the wall of the
building at 26 Goldie St., Wynyard (roundabout exiting east).
