For about 20 years, I've been trying to capture in images, what the flowers of tall bearded irises mean to me. I think I'm about there now. They are extravaganzas. The colours, the folds, the delicateness. The sheer improbability of them. For me they symbolize openness, looseness, seductiveness. The name appropriately stems from the Greek rainbow goddess Iris. These flowers have fascinated artisans for millenia. Depictions of them occur in ancient Persian embroideries, tiles & pottery. The Japanese carved them in jade & crystal. They're in religious works of art. Da VInci & Bruegel painted them.
